Creating a Healthier Environment for Wellbeing

 Our surroundings directly impact our health, influencing everything from toxin exposure to air quality. By making intentional changes to my environment, I reduce harmful pollutants, eliminate disruptive chemicals, and create a space that supports my physical and mental well-being. 

Removing Toxins: Eliminating Phthalates, BPA, and Microplastics

Toxins from plastics and industrial chemicals accumulate in the body, affecting hormonal balance, pregnancy outcomes, and long-term health. Here’s why I avoid them: 


Phthalates: Endocrine Disruptors That Interfere with Hormones 

Phthalates are commonly found in plastics, cosmetics, and household products. These chemicals mimic or block hormones, leading to imbalances in the endocrine system. Studies have linked phthalates to: 

  • Reproductive Issues – In both men and women, phthalates reduce fertility by disrupting testosterone and estrogen regulation. 
  • Pregnancy & Foetal Development Risks – Exposure during pregnancy can affect foetal development, increasing the risk of birth defects, preterm birth, and neurodevelopmental disorders in children. 
  • Metabolic & Thyroid Disorders – Phthalates interfere with thyroid hormones, contributing to metabolic dysfunction, weight gain, and insulin resistance. 


BPA (Bisphenol A): Toxic Effects on Brain and Hormone Function 

BPA, commonly found in food can linings, receipts, and plastics, has been shown to negatively impact: 

  • Hormonal Health – BPA acts as a xenoestrogen, meaning it mimics estrogen in the body, disrupting natural hormone cycles. 
  • Neurological Development – Prenatal exposure to BPA has been linked to behavioural changes and cognitive impairments in children. 
  • Increased Risk of Cancer – Some research suggests BPA exposure may elevate the risk of breast and prostate cancer due to its estrogen-mimicking properties. 


Microplastics: Hidden Pollutants That Accumulate in the Body 

Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments found in water sources, food, and even the air we breathe. Their impact on health includes: 

  • Hormonal Disruption – Microplastics often contain additives like phthalates and BPA, further contributing to endocrine disruption. 
  • Inflammation & Cellular Stress – Studies suggest microplastics may trigger chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, increasing the risk of diseases. 
  • Gut Health & Microbiome Damage – Consuming microplastics may alter gut microbiota, weakening digestive function and immune defence. 


How I Reduce Exposure to These Toxins 

  • Using Glass & Stainless Steel – I’ve replaced plastic containers and bottles with glass and stainless steel to minimise exposure. 
  • Being Mindful of Food Packaging – I choose brands with BPA-free packaging or opt for fresh and frozen alternatives. 
  • Filtering Water – A high-quality water purifier removes heavy metals, chlorine, and microplastics, ensuring cleaner drinking water. 

Food Additives: Avoiding Chemicals That Disrupt Gut Health

 Many processed foods contain additives that negatively impact the gut microbiome, inflammation levels, and digestion. I avoid: 

  • Emulsifiers – Found in processed foods, emulsifiers disrupt gut bacteria, potentially contributing to inflammation and digestive discomfort. 
  • Preservatives & Artificial Colours – Certain preservatives (like sodium benzoate) and artificial dyes affect neurotransmitter function and gut health. 
  • Chemical Flavour Enhancers – MSG and other enhancers overstimulate neurotransmitters, affecting mood and cognition. 

Instead, I prioritise whole, unprocessed foods with clean ingredients, supporting optimal digestion and microbiome health. 

Air Quality: Reducing Pollution and Improving Indoor Air Stress Management

 Indoor air pollution can be just as concerning as outdoor smog, with toxins from furniture, cleaning products, and environmental pollutants lingering in the air. To maintain a clean breathing space, I incorporate: 

  • Air Purifiers – A high-efficiency HEPA air filter reduces allergens, pollutants, and VOCs, keeping my home’s air fresh. 
  • Non-toxic Cleaning Products – Conventional cleaners release harmful chemicals, so I use natural alternatives to prevent exposure. 
  • Ventilation & Plants – Opening windows and adding indoor plants filters air naturally, improving oxygen levels and reducing airborne contaminants. 

Skincare, Makeup & Sunscreen: Removing Toxic Ingredients from My Routine

 Many personal care products contain endocrine disruptors, allergens, and harmful additives that absorb into the skin and bloodstream. Here’s what I avoid: 

 Harmful Chemicals in Skincare & Makeup 

  • Parabens – Found in moisturisers and cosmetics, parabens mimic estrogen, disrupting hormones and increasing breast cancer risk. 
  • Sulfates – Harsh surfactants like SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) strip natural oils, leading to skin irritation and long-term sensitivity. 
  • Synthetic Fragrances – Many "fragrance" ingredients are phthalate-based, contributing to allergies, hormone disruption, and respiratory issues. 


Toxic Sun Lotion: The Hidden Dangers of Chemical Sunscreens 

Traditional sunscreens contain chemical UV filters that not only affect human health but also damage marine ecosystems. The worst offenders include: 

  • Oxybenzone & Octinoxate – These chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream and disrupt hormone function, affecting thyroid balance and reproductive health. 
  • Nanoparticles – Some sunscreens use nano-sized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which may penetrate the skin barrier, leading to unknown systemic effects. 
  • Coral Reef Damage – Many chemical sunscreens contribute to marine pollution, harming coral reefs and ocean ecosystems. 


Healthier Alternatives 

  • Mineral Sunscreens – I use non-nano zinc oxide sunscreens for effective UV protection without toxic additives. 
  • Natural & Organic Skincare – Choosing clean beauty brands helps me avoid parabens, synthetic fragrances, and endocrine disruptors. 
  • Oil-Based Sun Protection – Some natural oils, like red raspberry seed oil, offer mild UV protection while nourishing the skin.
